Season 2 (Spring) Episode 1 (Pioneer Village)

On Today’s episode of Adventures with Gary The Wood Sprite: Season 2, (Spring) episode 1 (Pioneer Village). Its March 26, 2026. We started at pioneer village road in Massie township, Ohio within Caesar Creek State Park which is just next door to the Caesar Creek Nature Center (see season 1, episode 2). This was my very first time visiting a living history museum! Yay!

Pioneer Village has over 18 relocated and restored log buildings from the 18th and 19th century. Even though the buildings weren’t open today, it’s neat to have a hands-on feeling of history when touching the structures. While looking in one of the houses the wind was blowing a curtain because of a broken window pane and I thought he saw a ghost and got scared. Phew! The I explored the woods around it with some botanist friends and we identified upcoming spring plants.

When I noticed an adorable furrow orb weaver spider on my friend’s hat, I wanted to hug it so much! As a wood sprite I can communicate with all insects but I give them respect and not touch them. They are wild creatures. It’s important not to pet wild animals because it’s harmful to both you and them—even if they look calm or friendly. Wildlife like raccoon, deer, or fox are not domesticated, and can react unpredictably. Even animals that seem “used to people” can still bite, scratch, or attack if they feel threatened or surprised. Insects especially!

I found an extra-large acorn hat that I put on top of my existing one. Hysterical. I found gorgeous red elf cups, putty root orchid (see S1E1), may apples, hiding places (of course), polyporaceae fungi, tulip poplar seed pods, spring beauties, a maple seed sprouting, trash fishing lure (standard), fish vertebrae, and a buckeye tree sapling.
