Season 1 (Winter) Episode 6 (Fallsville Falls)

On Today’s episode of Adventures with Gary The Wood Sprite: Season 1, (winter) episode 6 (Fallsville Falls) Its March 7, 2026. The waterfall sits inside the Fallsville Wildlife Area. The nearest present-day town is New Vienna in Clinton County, Ohio. This was my very first time finding a small spring ephemeral. Yay!

It’s called Snow Trillium. It is one of the earliest of the spring wildflowers, hence the name because it often blooms while snow is still on the ground. It only blooms for a few weeks and then goes back underground for the rest of the year. The important lesson is: don’t. don’t pick flowers in the woods. I know, I know, even if they are beautiful and you love your special someone and want to hand them a flower. Here’s why: this snow trillium for example, its uncommon and only found in specific conditions: (limestone soils, riverbanks). It takes this plant between 3 and 10 years to grow its flower! Picking a snow trillium doesn’t just remove a flower—it can: stop reproduction for the year, weaken or kill the plant, Reduce future populations in that area.

I also got to see a huge waterfall (duh) a cute little pond, lots of mud, some trash including some sharpies weirdly, and a bright green lichen called Parmeliaceae. I did break my arm this trip, but that’s ok because wood sprites – like nature – can mend themselves. Also, my dog friends went with me again. I love them so much.
